Tiki's Story

New Beginnings Shepherd Rescue was asked to help with a heartbreaking situation and is desperately trying to raise the money necessary to SAVE this precious little girl's life. She hasn't even had a chance to live yet as she is just a BABY!! The young owner is an amazing person, so the rescue wants to do the RIGHT thing & help this puppy get the surgery that she needs TO LIVE! We are looking at approximately $10,000 to save her young life.

Please meet our sweet little TIKI. She is a loving German Shepherd puppy who was born in February to a backyard breeder in PA. Tiki’s mother belonged to a backyard breeder, he was informed that there was something terribly wrong with this adorable little puppy, but he refused to spend the money to get her treated. He made it clear to people who had seen the puppy that he was not going to waste his time or money with her and would just put her down since he couldn’t sell her. A very sweet young National Guard Army Sergeant in the neighborhood heard about this and immediately went to offer help for the little puppy. After talking the breeder into letting her take Tiki to try and save this sweet puppy’s life, she immediately took Tiki to the nearest vet to find out what would be making this little girl regurgitate “everything” she ate and have a “sloshing sound” inside of her body…….It was determined that Tiki has Mega Esophagus (Mega E) caused by Persistent Right Aortic Arch (PRAA), which requires immediate surgical intervention ASAP or it will be fatal. PRAA is a stricture of the Esophagus that gets worse and more restrictive as the puppy grows, eventually if not corrected the esophagus will be cut off completely and NO food will get to the puppy's stomach at all.

New Beginnings Shepherd Rescue, Inc. was asked to help TIKI and we have committed to do our very best to get TIKI everything she needs to save her young life. We are working hard to raise the funds needed as the estimates are far over our heads financially, we desperately NEED YOUR HELP PLEASE.

The young NG Army Sergeant has been diligent in holding Tiki up to feed her but Tiki is growing and is getting too big to hold up and needs a “Bailey Chair” for Mega E, which the rescue is working diligently to obtain now that we have her measurements. The largest & most necessary life saving measure is the surgery that is needed immediately to correct the PRAA otherwise she will eventually become emaciated and weak leaving euthanasia as the only option. Time is of the essence; the longer TIKI goes without surgery the more dire the prognosis. The vet that the NG Army sergeant was taking her to in PA suggested to Tikis loving family to “just put her to sleep” and get another puppy!! The callousness was shocking & heartbreaking! Sweet Tiki isn’t a pair of shoes!!

The family was not willing to give up on Tiki so they reached out to several rescues who would NOT help, but someone suggested that they contact New Beginnings Shepherd Rescue since the family has relocated to SC. After talking to the family, we have chosen to find another vet here in SC who shares our belief that Tiki’s life has value and is willing to do the surgery that she needs to save her and give her the best chance to live a full long happy life!

This family is wonderful, and they love Tiki so much, they are willing to do whatever is necessary to give Tiki a wonderful long life. We need your help; this is a VERY expensive surgery that must be performed by a specialist.

NBSR has taken Tiki to CVETS - Columbia Veterinary Emergency Trauma and Specialty practice as advised by New Beginnings Shepherd Rescue’s regular vet. Dr. Wolff has confirmed the diagnosis of PRAA from Barium Xrays , but she also needs a CT scan with contrast before the surgery, so they know exactly what they are looking for before they go in to fix the birth defect.

We are trying to keep Tiki with her family as she loves them and they love her as you can see in the pictures. We are asking for donations, no amount is too small and all donations are greatly appreciated & tax deductible.

Thank you in advance
